Nobby Stiles for England was bite, discipline, and absolute functional importance. He won only 28 caps between 1965 and 1970, but that undersells him badly because he was central to the 1966 World Cup-winning side, playing every minute of the tournament. His job was not glamour; it was to disrupt, cover, and give better footballers the freedom to shine. In modern terms, he was England’s destroyer before the role had that language. His semi-final work on Eusébio became especially famous, and the image of him dancing with the trophy fixed him in national memory. Stiles’s England legacy is simple: tough, essential, and forever tied to 1966.
