Paul Scholes won 66 caps for England (1997–2004), scoring 14 goals, and played at Euro 2000, the 2002 World Cup, and Euro 2004. Used as a central midfielder with elite passing and shooting, he was often deployed wide left to fit England’s “golden generation” midfield, which limited his influence in his best position. His standout England moment was a 30-yard winner against Scotland at Euro 96 (he was 21). Scholes retired from international football after Euro 2004, still widely seen as one of England’s most naturally gifted midfielders of the era.
