Wayne Rooney wearing England’s number 9 became the symbol of a whole era. From his teenage breakout in 2003 through the 2010s, he was the main striker even when his best club role shifted—sometimes playing as a lone forward, sometimes dropping off to link play, and often sacrificing his own scoring positions to press and create for others. At tournaments he carried massive expectation: Euro 2004 brilliance, then injuries, suspensions, and tactical compromises that dulled his impact. Even so, he finished with 53 goals in 120 caps, England’s record at the time, and remained the team’s reference point for more than a decade.
