Michael Owen played for England from 1998 to 2008, winning 89 caps and scoring 40 goals. He exploded onto the scene as a teenager at the 1998 World Cup, scoring a famous solo goal against Argentina and becoming England’s youngest World Cup scorer. Owen was a pure penalty-box striker: explosive pace, sharp movement, and quick finishing. His peak England stretch ran through the early 2000s—he scored in Euro 2000, netted a key equaliser against Argentina at the 2002 World Cup, and hit a hat-trick in England’s 5–1 win in Germany (2001). Injuries later reduced his impact, but his international strike rate remained elite.
