Roger Hunt for England was goals, industry, and understated importance. He did not have the mythic aura of some 1966 names, but he was crucial to that World Cup side because he gave it constant movement, honest work, and reliable finishing. Hunt won 34 caps and scored 18 goals for England between 1962 and 1969. What fixes his place in history is 1966. Hunt started all six matches of England’s World Cup-winning campaign and scored three goals, including two against France and one against Mexico in the group stage. The National Football Museum notes he was the only England forward to start every game in that tournament. So his England legacy is not about flamboyance. It is about being essential: a striker who worked, scored, and helped make the greatest year in England’s football history function.
