Jimmy Greaves for England was goals, instinct, and one of the great what-ifs. He won 57 caps and scored 44 goals between 1959 and 1967, a remarkable return that still leaves him among England’s top scorers, and the FA notes he remains the only England player to score six hat-tricks. At his best, he was a pure finisher: sharp movement, fast reactions, and that gift of making chances feel simpler than they were. The complication is 1966. He began that World Cup as first-choice striker, but injury against France opened the door for Geoff Hurst, which turned Greaves’s England story slightly bittersweet. So his England legacy is huge, but tinged with absence: one of the country’s natural great scorers, forever linked to the tournament he helped start but did not get to finish.
