Steve Coppell for England was consistency, width, and a lot of bad luck. He was a proper right winger: direct, hard-working, and capable of giving the team both balance and penetration rather than just tricks. Between 1977 and 1983, he won 42 caps and scored 7 goals for England, playing at Euro 1980 and the 1982 World Cup. What shapes his England story most is the injury against Hungary in a 1981 World Cup qualifier, which badly damaged his knee and altered the rest of his career. Even so, he battled on through the 1982 World Cup. So his England legacy feels slightly bittersweet: a very good international winger whose peak might have been even bigger without that injury.
