Terry Cooper for England was energy, intelligence, and modern full-back play before it became fashionable. A left-back by trade, he gave the side width, overlap, and technical quality rather than just basic defending, which made him stand out in that era. He won 20 caps from 1969 to 1974 and was England’s first-choice left-back at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, where his performances were widely praised despite the quarter-final defeat to West Germany. His England legacy is slightly brief because injury cut into it, but at his best he felt ahead of his time: athletic, adventurous, and classy from the back.
