Trevor Cherry for England was reliability, versatility, and very little fuss. He was the kind of defender managers trust because he could cover across the back line, stay disciplined, and give the side a steady level rather than dramatic highs and lows. Between 1976 and 1980, he won 27 caps for England, and he even captained the side once in a warm-up win over Australia before Euro 1980. His major tournament story was brief, with only one substitute appearance at that Euros, but his legacy remains that of a dependable international defender: solid, adaptable, and understated.
