Gordon Banks was England’s first-choice goalkeeper in the 1966 World Cup triumph and is widely regarded as one of the greatest keepers ever. He won 73 England caps (1963–1972) and was famed for reflexes, handling, and calm authority. His most iconic international moment came at the 1970 World Cup: the point-blank save from Pelé’s header vs Brazil, often labelled the “save of the century.” Banks missed the 1970 quarter-final vs West Germany through illness; England lost 3–2 after leading 2–0. A 1972 car crash cost him sight in one eye and ended his top-level career.
