Gordon Banks is widely regarded as England’s greatest goalkeeper and was the No.1 in the 1966 World Cup-winning side. He won 73 caps (1963–1972) and was known for outstanding reflexes, handling, and calm authority. His defining England moment came at the 1970 World Cup against Brazil: his point-blank stop from Pelé’s header—often called the “Save of the Century.” Illness ruled him out of the 1970 quarter-final vs West Germany (which England lost 3–2 after leading 2–0). A 1972 car crash later cost him sight in one eye and effectively ended his top-level career.
