Gareth Southgate came through Crystal Palace’s youth system and made his senior breakthrough there, becoming one of the club’s most important early-1990s players. Palace’s own history of his career says he emerged as a teenager, became club captain at a young age, and led the side to the old First Division title in 1993–94. He played for Palace from 1988 to 1995, making 152 league appearances and scoring 15 goals. He was valued for versatility as much as leadership, playing in defence and midfield, before leaving for Aston Villa in 1995 after Palace’s relegation. For Palace, Southgate is remembered as a classy, intelligent captain who helped drive one of the club’s key promotion campaigns.
