Dave Sexton was a thoughtful, tactically modern English manager who improved teams through organisation and coaching detail. At Chelsea (1967–74) he built an exciting young side, winning the 1970 FA Cup and the 1971 European Cup Winners’ Cup, Chelsea’s first European trophy. He later took QPR to a surprise 2nd-place league finish in 1975–76, then managed Manchester United from 1977–81, reaching the 1979 FA Cup final. After clubs, he enjoyed major success with England’s Under-21s, winning the European Championship in 1982 and 1984. His methods anticipated the coaching-first era: sessions were planned, opponents studied, and roles defined.
