Nemanja Matić had two Chelsea spells: a brief first stint (2009–11) and then a major second run from 2014–2017 after returning from Benfica. A tall, disciplined holding midfielder, he gave Chelsea balance with ball-winning, positional sense, and simple, secure passing—often freeing more attacking midfielders to play. He was a key starter in José Mourinho’s 2014–15 title-winning side, and stayed important through the next season before leaving for Manchester United in 2017. At his best, Matić was the classic tempo-setter: calm under pressure, strong in duels, and hard to play through.
