Enzo Fernández joined Chelsea in January 2023 from Benfica for £106.8m, a British-record fee at the time. Wearing No.8, he’s been used as a deep-lying controller or box-to-box midfielder: setting tempo, switching play, and arriving late around the box, while also doing plenty of defensive covering. Since arriving he’s been a near-ever-present in Chelsea’s midfield rebuild, tasked with linking defence to attack and adding leadership in possession. As of 17 Jan 2026, he had 103 Chelsea appearances and 15 goals (all competitions).
