Didier Deschamps spent a single season at Chelsea (1999–2000), arriving from Juventus in June 1999 for about £3m. He brought elite tournament know-how, operating as a disciplined holding midfielder who shielded the defence and kept possession moving. Deschamps made 27 Premier League appearances, often alongside senior leaders like Marcel Desailly and Dennis Wise. His calm authority suited Vialli’s squad during Chelsea’s first Champions League season. Chelsea’s campaign ended with silverware: they won the 2000 FA Cup, and Deschamps scored his only Chelsea goal in the Champions League against Hertha Berlin. After one year, he departed for Valencia in summer 2000.
