Ricardo Carvalho was Chelsea’s elite ball-playing centre-back from 2004–2010, signed by José Mourinho from Porto and forming a defining partnership with John Terry. Calm under pressure, quick across the ground, and superb at reading danger, he helped drive Chelsea’s record-setting defensive dominance in the mid-2000s. Across 210 appearances (11 goals), Carvalho won three Premier League titles (2004–05, 2005–06, 2009–10), three FA Cups, and two League Cups. He was also voted Chelsea Players’ Player of the Year (2008) before leaving for Real Madrid in 2010.
