Michael Ballack played for Chelsea from 2006–2010, arriving on a free after leaving Bayern Munich. A powerful, intelligent midfielder, he gave Chelsea leadership, late runs into the box, and big-game edge—often as the experienced foil to Lampard and Essien. He won the Premier League in 2009–10, plus three FA Cups and a League Cup, and was a key figure in Chelsea’s 2008 run to their first Champions League final. Injuries limited parts of his spell, but at his best he was dominant: physical in duels, sharp in transitions, and decisive in knockout football.
