Brentford’s 2021 play-off run was the breakthrough moment that finally took them into the Premier League. They lost the semi-final first leg 1–0 to Bournemouth, but came back to win the second leg 3–1, going through 3–2 on aggregate. In the final at Wembley on 29 May 2021, Brentford beat Swansea City 2–0 with goals from Ivan Toney and Emiliano Marcondes. It mattered so much because it ended Brentford’s long play-off frustration and secured their first-ever Premier League promotion through the EFL play-offs. That run felt like the moment years of smart planning, near-misses, and growth finally paid off.
