Gil Merrick is one of Birmingham City’s true legends: a hometown goalkeeper from Sparkhill who spent his entire senior playing career with the Blues (from 1939 to 1960), making 700+ appearances. He was also England’s No.1 in the early 1950s, winning 23 caps and playing at the 1954 World Cup—and he famously faced Hungary’s “Magical Magyars” in those landmark friendlies. After retiring, Merrick managed Birmingham (1960–64) and led them to their first major trophy: the 1963 League Cup, beating Aston Villa.
