Steve Bruce is a major Birmingham City figure as both captain and manager. As a player, he joined in 1996, wore the armband, and was the defensive leader of a side pushing back toward the top end of the Football League. He returned as manager in December 2001 and transformed the club’s fortunes, winning promotion to the Premier League via the 2002 play-offs. He then stabilised Blues in the top flight, later suffering relegation in 2006 before bouncing straight back with promotion in 2007. He left in November 2007, remembered for rebuilding Birmingham’s modern identity.
