Steve Bruce’s Birmingham City story has two chapters: player and manager. As a player, he captained the side in the late 90s. As manager, he took over on 12 December 2001 and stayed until 23 November 2007. His biggest early hit was ending Blues’ long top-flight exile by winning the 2002 First Division play-off final vs Norwich City, clinching promotion on penalties after a 1–1 draw. He kept them up for a few seasons, suffered relegation in 2005–06, then bounced straight back with promotion in 2006–07—making him a defining modern manager at St Andrew’s.
