Tony Barton was the quietly brilliant man who took Aston Villa to the very top of Europe. He’d been Ron Saunders’ assistant during the 1981 league title, then stepped up as manager in February 1982 when Saunders resigned. Just three months later, Barton led Villa to win the European Cup, beating Bayern Munich 1–0 in Rotterdam on 26 May 1982—with Peter Withe scoring and sub keeper Nigel Spink starring. Barton followed it up by winning the European Super Cup in 1982 (over Barcelona) before leaving Villa in May 1984.
