Charlie Aitken was Aston Villa’s long-serving left-back and the club’s all-time record appearance-maker. He joined Villa as a teenager in 1959 and played for the first team from 1961 to 1976, racking up 660 appearances (a mark the club itself says is unlikely to be beaten). A consistent, dependable defender through promotions, relegations, and recoveries, Aitken helped Villa win the Third Division title (1971–72) and the League Cup (1975). After leaving Villa, he had a short spell with the New York Cosmos.
