Thomas Vermaelen’s Arsenal spell (2009–2014) began brilliantly and ended a bit sadly. Signed from Ajax, he made an instant impact as an aggressive, front-foot centre-back who could also score—his debut season was packed with goals, crunching tackles, and leadership vibes. He was quick across the ground, loved stepping into midfield to intercept, and became club captain. But recurring injuries (especially Achilles/ankle issues) wrecked his rhythm and availability, and his form dipped when he played through fitness problems. By 2014 Arsenal cashed in, selling him to Barcelona, leaving fans with the feeling his peak at the club was shorter than his talent deserved.
