Per Mertesacker was Arsenal’s calm, intelligent centre-back from 2011 to 2018—never quick over five yards, but elite at reading the game. At 6'6", he dominated aerially, organized the line, and made defending look simple through positioning and timing. He became club captain and a dressing-room leader, central to Arsenal’s shift from trophy drought to cup winners. Mertesacker won three FA Cups (2014, 2015, 2017). His defining moment was the 2017 FA Cup final: thrown in after barely playing all season, he produced a masterclass against Chelsea and lifted the trophy at Wembley. After retiring, he moved into a key role developing young players at Arsenal.
