Gaël Clichy was Arsenal’s rapid, attack-minded left-back from 2003 to 2011, best known for his pace and nonstop overlapping. He broke through as a teenager and famously started the 2006 Champions League final after injuries to Ashley Cole, showing huge trust from Wenger. Clichy became first-choice in the post-Cole era, offering constant width, quick recovery runs, and tidy link play down the flank—especially alongside attackers like Pires, then later Nasri/Arshavin. Defensively he could be streaky (occasional positioning lapses), but his athleticism often bailed Arsenal out. He won the 2004 Premier League (Invincibles squad) and the 2005 FA Cup, then left for Manchester City in 2011.
