Nicolas Anelka’s first Arsenal spell (1997–1999) was short, explosive, and hugely important. Raw pace, ice-cold finishing, and that glide in behind made him the breakout star of Wenger’s early era. After arriving from PSG for relatively little, he became the main striker in 1998–99, scoring 17 Premier League goals and winning PFA Young Player of the Year. His goals helped drive the 1997–98 Double alongside Bergkamp and Overmars, stretching defences so Arsenal could counter at speed. The relationship cooled amid transfer drama, but his 1999 move to Real Madrid brought Arsenal a massive fee that later helped fund Wenger’s rebuild. Remembered as the original “next superstar” of that team.
