Peter Weir was one of Aberdeen’s most gifted wide players and a key figure in the club’s greatest era under Alex Ferguson. Signed from St Mirren in 1981 in what AFC Heritage describes as a record deal for the club at the time, he gave the Dons balance, creativity and dribbling threat from the wing. AFC Heritage says he “played a major part” in the 1983 European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph, while Aberdeen’s own site quotes Ferguson saying of the final that “no one did more on the night” than Weir. He made 237 appearances and scored 38 goals for Aberdeen, winning two league titles, four Scottish Cups, the 1985–86 League Cup, the 1983 Cup Winners’ Cup and the 1983 UEFA Super Cup.
