Gordon Strachan was a cornerstone of Aberdeen’s golden era. He signed on 3 November 1977 from Dundee in an exchange deal (Jim Shirra plus a cash fee) and evolved into the Dons’ creative, relentless right-sided leader under Alex Ferguson. He was pivotal as Aberdeen won the league in 1979–80 and 1983–84, three Scottish Cups (1982, 1983, 1984), the European Cup Winners’ Cup (1983) and European Super Cup (1983). Club records list 315 appearances and 97 goals before his 1984 move to Manchester United.
