Aberdeen’s 2014 League Cup win was a huge milestone under Derek McInnes. On 16 March 2014 at Celtic Park, the Dons beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle 4–2 on penalties after a 0–0 draw over 120 minutes. It was tense rather than spectacular, with few clear chances, but Aberdeen held their nerve in the shootout. Nicky Low, Scott Vernon and Jonny Hayes all converted, and Adam Rooney slammed home the decisive penalty to spark the celebrations. The trophy mattered even more because it ended Aberdeen’s 19-year wait for major silverware, their first since winning the League Cup in 1995.
