Dixie McNeil became a Wrexham legend during two prolific spells at the Racecourse Ground, establishing himself as one of the club’s finest goalscorers; the powerful centre-forward was particularly influential after returning in 1977, scoring heavily as John Neal’s outstanding side won the Third Division title in 1977–78 and reached the FA Cup quarter-finals; McNeil’s strength, aerial ability and instinctive finishing made him a huge supporters’ favourite, and he finished his Wrexham career with over 100 goals before later returning to the club as manager in the 1980s, further strengthening his association with the Red Dragons.
