Wolverhampton Wanderers won the 1974 League Cup, beating Manchester City 2–1 at Wembley to secure their first League Cup and first major trophy since 1960; managed by Bill McGarry, Wolves took the lead through Kenny Hibbitt before Colin Bell equalised for City, setting up a tense finish; with just five minutes remaining, legendary striker John Richards scored the decisive goal to send the Wolves supporters into celebration; goalkeeper Gary Pierce produced an outstanding performance against a talented City attack, while captain Mike Bailey lifted the trophy, and the victory became one of the defining achievements of a strong Wolves side featuring stars such as Derek Dougan and Frank Munro.
