Alan Devonshire became a West Ham United legend after joining from non-league Southall for just £5,000 in 1976, developing into an elegant and exciting left-sided midfielder renowned for his dribbling, creativity and balance; “Dev” played a major role in the Hammers’ 1980 FA Cup triumph, helping the Second Division side defeat Arsenal 1–0 at Wembley, and then contributed to the 1980–81 Second Division title; after recovering from a serious knee injury, he returned to play his part in West Ham’s remarkable third-place First Division finish in 1985–86, their highest-ever league position, and made more than 400 appearances before leaving in 1990.
