Wilf Rostron became a Watford legend after joining from Arsenal in 1979, playing a major role in Graham Taylor’s remarkable rise through the divisions; initially a winger, Rostron was successfully converted into an energetic left-back, becoming a model of consistency as the Hornets reached the First Division and remarkably finished runners-up in 1982–83; he also captained Watford during one of the club’s greatest seasons, but heartbreakingly missed the 1984 FA Cup final through suspension after being sent off against Luton shortly before Wembley; renowned for his stamina, versatility and commitment, Rostron made more than 400 appearances for Watford before leaving in 1989.
