Sir Elton John became one of the most important figures in Watford’s history after becoming chairman in 1976, using his passion, profile and financial backing to help transform his boyhood club; his appointment of Graham Taylor in 1977 proved inspired, with Watford rising from the Fourth Division to the First Division in just five years, finishing league runners-up in 1982–83 and reaching the 1984 FA Cup final; Elton later returned for another spell as chairman and remained closely connected to the Hornets for decades, with a stand at Vicarage Road named in his honour in 2014, reflecting a unique relationship between one of the world’s biggest music stars and his hometown football club.
