John Barnes became a Watford legend after joining as a teenager in 1981, having been spotted playing non-league football for Sudbury Court; under Graham Taylor, the gifted winger developed into one of England’s most exciting players, combining pace, dribbling, creativity and goals as Watford finished an extraordinary second in the First Division in 1982–83 and later reached the 1984 FA Cup final; Barnes also helped the Hornets compete in European football and earned his first England cap in 1983, making nearly 300 appearances and scoring 85 goals for Watford before joining Liverpool in 1987, where he became one of the finest players of his generation.
