Dean Saunders became a key figure for Wales during the late 1980s and 1990s, winning 75 caps and scoring 22 goals between 1986 and 2001; a quick, aggressive and intelligent centre-forward, Saunders formed part of a talented Welsh generation alongside Ian Rush, Mark Hughes, Ryan Giggs and Neville Southall, coming agonisingly close to qualification for both the 1992 European Championship and 1994 World Cup; among his most memorable international moments was scoring the winner in a famous 1–0 victory over Brazil in 1991, and his longevity and goals established him among Wales’ leading international strikers.
