Leighton James became one of Wales’ outstanding players of the 1970s, winning 54 caps and scoring 10 goals between 1971 and 1983; a quick, skilful and fiercely competitive winger, he was central to the Welsh side that reached the Euro 1976 quarter-finals, scoring a penalty in the famous 1–0 victory over England at Wembley in 1977—Wales’ first win there since 1936—and remained an important international figure alongside players such as John Toshack, Terry Yorath and Brian Flynn, with his flair and combative personality making him one of the most memorable Welsh footballers of his generation.
