Chris Coleman became one of the most important managers in Wales history after taking charge in 2012, recovering from a difficult beginning to build a close-knit side around Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and Ashley Williams; he guided Wales to Euro 2016, their first major tournament since the 1958 World Cup, where victories over Slovakia, Russia, Northern Ireland and a famous 3–1 quarter-final win over Belgium carried them to an extraordinary semi-final against Portugal; Wales ultimately lost 2–0, but their historic run to the last four transformed Coleman into a national hero, and he remained manager until 2017.
