Wales qualified for the 2022 World Cup by finishing second in UEFA qualifying Group E behind Belgium (group also included the Czech Republic, Belarus and Estonia), with Rob Page in charge. A 1–1 draw with Belgium in Cardiff (17 Nov 2021) secured second place and seeded status for the play-offs. In the Path A semi-final, Wales beat Austria 2–1 with two Gareth Bale goals. They then defeated Ukraine 1–0 (5 Jun 2022) in the final, the winner coming from Bale’s free-kick (later credited to Bale after review), ending a 64-year wait to reach the finals.
