Jimmy Montgomery is Sunderland AFC’s iconic goalkeeper: a local lad from Hendon who joined in 1960 and made a club-record 627 appearances (537 league) across 1960–77. Best remembered for the 1973 FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium, his reflex double save—tipping a header onto the bar, then blocking the rebound—preserved a 1–0 shock over Leeds United. At Roker Park he mixed brave shot-stopping with calm authority, later staying close as a club ambassador.
