Roy Keane’s Sunderland reign (Aug 2006–Dec 2008) was short, intense, and transformative. He took over in the EFL Championship with the club struggling after a record-low Premier League relegation, then drove an immediate turnaround—winning the 2006–07 title and promotion. Under chairman Niall Quinn, he built a direct, hard-running side at the Stadium of Light with key additions like Kenwyne Jones, finishing 15th in 2007–08. His ferocious standards lifted belief, but transfer churn and boardroom strains (including Ellis Short) tightened the screw when form dipped. He resigned in December 2008 with the team in the relegation zone.
