Gordon Banks became a Stoke City legend after joining from Leicester City in 1967, shortly after helping England win the 1966 World Cup; regarded as one of football’s greatest goalkeepers, Banks brought outstanding reflexes, positioning and composure to the Potters and played a crucial role in their 1972 League Cup triumph, beating Chelsea 2–1 at Wembley to secure Stoke’s first major trophy; his performances for England while at Stoke included his legendary save from Pelé at the 1970 World Cup, but his career was tragically interrupted in 1972 when a car accident cost him the sight in his right eye, ending his top-level career and a remarkable spell at the club.
