Steve Moran was one of Southampton’s best natural goalscorers of the 1980s. A product of the club, he played for Saints from 1979 to 1986 and scored 99 goals in 229 first-team appearances. He was quick, sharp, and instinctive in the box rather than a flamboyant forward, thriving on timing and finishing. His best season came in 1983–84, when he scored 25 goals in all competitions as Southampton finished runners-up in the First Division, one of the strongest campaigns in the club’s history. Moran also won the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 1982, which underlined how highly he was rated.
