Francis Benali became a Southampton cult hero after coming through the club’s youth system and spending almost his entire playing career with Saints from 1988 to 2004; a tough, uncompromising left-back renowned for his commitment, aggressive tackling and unmistakable moustache, the Southampton-born defender made more than 350 appearances and became a huge favourite at The Dell despite famously scoring only one competitive goal for the club; Benali played alongside stars such as Matt Le Tissier throughout Southampton’s battles to remain in the Premier League and later remained closely connected to the club, while his extraordinary charity endurance challenges further strengthened his status as a much-loved Southampton figure.
