Neil Warnock managed Sheffield United from 1999 to 2007, leading his boyhood club through a memorable period at Bramall Lane; in 2002–03, the Blades reached both the FA Cup and League Cup semi-finals as well as the First Division play-off final, before Warnock finally delivered promotion to the Premier League in 2005–06 by finishing second in the Championship; his passionate, confrontational style made him a perfect fit for United, but their Premier League season ended in heartbreaking relegation on the final day in 2007, when a 2–1 home defeat to Wigan sent them down, and Warnock left shortly afterwards following nearly eight years in charge.
