James Beattie joined Sheffield United from Everton in 2007 following the club’s relegation from the Premier League and quickly became their main goalscoring threat; the former England striker scored 22 Championship goals in his first season, combining powerful centre-forward play with outstanding ability from free-kicks and penalties, and remained prolific during the first half of 2008–09 before joining Stoke City in January; Beattie later returned briefly to Bramall Lane in 2011–12, but it was his explosive first spell—34 goals in 65 appearances in all competitions—that made him a popular figure with Blades supporters despite narrowly missing out on promotion.
