The 1972 season is one of the most celebrated in the history of Rangers F.C. because it delivered the club’s greatest European triumph. Managed by Willie Waddell, Rangers won the European Cup Winners' Cup by defeating Dynamo Moscow 3–2 in the final at the Camp Nou in Barcelona. Captained by John Greig, Rangers featured a memorable side including Colin Stein, Willie Johnston, Derek Johnstone and Sandy Jardine. Johnston scored twice in the final before Stein added a third goal that ultimately proved decisive. The road to Barcelona included victories over Rennes, Sporting CP, Torino and Bayern Munich, demonstrating Rangers’ ability to compete with some of Europe's strongest clubs. The victory gave Rangers their first and, to date, only major European trophy. For Rangers supporters, 1972 represents far more than a cup win. It symbolises the club's place among Europe's elite and remains one of the proudest chapters in the history of Ibrox. John Greig lifting the trophy remains one of the most iconic images in Scottish football.
