Gerry Francis became a QPR legend as both player and manager, first emerging from the club’s youth system in the late 1960s and developing into an elegant, influential midfielder; as captain, Francis was the heartbeat of Dave Sexton’s outstanding 1975–76 side, which played superb football and finished Second Division? Wait—First Division runners-up, just one point behind champions Liverpool; his passing, leadership and goals also earned him the England captaincy, and he made more than 300 appearances across two playing spells at Loftus Road; Francis later returned as manager in 1991, guiding Rangers to fifth place in the inaugural Premier League season of 1992–93, making him one of QPR’s most important modern figures.
